Invasives on a Global Scale
Across the globe, invasives are causing damage to many things including our wallets. The Bluebonnet, the state flower of Texas, is actually an invasive in New Zealand. How could this be? In New Zealand, the bluebonnet has taken over and is harming the native plants of their environment. As well as invasives in New Zealand, they are many other places too. The U.S. has invasives from all over the world. How do invasives spread? Most invasive plants are brought over because of their exotic and beautiful appearance and as they begin to grow and let their seeds fall they populate areas a a low rate until they find their "niche" in the environment to allow them to spread rapidly. |
The Burmese Python
The Burmese Python is an example of this. This python was often brought over as an exotic pet, but as these exotic pets outgrew their owners, they were released into the Everglades. Now these snakes are everywhere in the Everglades.
